Aerogel insulation, often called the lightest solid on Earth, has been widely applied in construction for ultra-thin wall, roof, and window insulation; in industry for pipelines, tanks, and industrial equipment to save energy and improve safety; and in aerospace, automotive, and cryogenic systems to protect against extreme temperatures. How does silica aerogel function as a Class A fire-resistant material?
Silica aerogel features an inorganic structure, consisting of a silicon dioxide (SiO2) skeletal network with air pockets filling up to 99% of its volume. Since the matrix itself is completely non-combustible and displays very low thermal diffusivity, it blocks heat transfer, preventing flame propagation at temperatures over 1000°C without producing toxic smoke.
